Filters become saturated with contaminants under regular use, which is why we recommend filters be replaced in pairs. If the filters are replaced on one side only, the airflow coming into the unit might be less on one side as well, which could cause noise issues and damage the fans of the unit as replacing only one filter will leave it unbalanced.
